After spending most of her career in inter-collegiate athletics, Addie Lucatorto decided it was time to make a change to a setting that was more student-focused.
On June 20, the Ambridge Area School District offered Ms. Lucatorto the opportunity she was seeking, hiring her as the District’s new Athletic Director. Ms. Lucatorto replaces Mr. Brian Miller, who resigned from the position in March.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to work with younger student athletes,” Ms. Lucatorto said. “I have missed being in a position where the welfare of the student athlete is a primary mission of the institution. At this level, adults can truly make a positive impact on young people’s lives.”
Ms. Lucatorto said some of her best memories of growing up were when she was busy in high school with sports, drama, choir and numerous clubs. “Those opportunities set me on my path. People never told me that I couldn’t achieve my goals. They helped me to find the way to achievement. I have worked to mentor in the same way that I was blessed to be mentored.”
She began her career as an athletic trainer and spent time working daily with student athletes. She then moved into a more administrative role as a Senior Woman Administrator with Robert Morris University. Ms. Lucatorto served in her most recent position of Associate Athletic Director with Robert Morris University from 2006 through 2019.
Ms. Lucatorto prides herself on being a critical thinker who will ask the tough questions so that solutions can be found to any situation. With only a month on the job, Ms. Lucatorto jumped right into the planning for Homecoming Weekend, which includes a community pep rally on Thursday, Sept. 19 and the big parade and game, scheduled for Friday, September 20. The full schedule of events for Homecoming weekend will be announced soon. She also has had a hand in planning and organizing the first annual Bridger Back-to-School Kick-Off celebration, planned for noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19 at Wright Field House.
Something the AASD community can expect from Ms. Lucatorto is a growing presence for AASD athletics on the athletics website and social media. She plans to provide snapshots about athletic events, AASD athletes and other important information on the Twitter and Facebook accounts. She has also made it a priority to launch an AASD Athletics Instagram account for the purpose of sharing photos of our athletes and athletic events and accomplishments.
“We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Addie’s skill set and experience in this position,” said Superintendent Dr. Jo Welter. “She truly cares about the well-being and overall success of our student athletes, not just on the field, but off the field as well.”
Ms. Lucatorto said she has felt very comfortable transitioning into her new role, and credits the Ambridge community for the ease in which she has been able to make the change. “The Ambridge community has been incredibly welcoming. I have met a lot of wonderful people that are committed to giving the students in AASD a positive athletic experience.”

The Ambridge Area School District is pleased to announce its participation in the Community Eligibility Provision program for the 2019-2020 School Year.
“Effective Aug. 27, 2019, all students enrolled in the Ambridge Area School District are eligible to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch every day at the school at no charge to families,” said Mrs. Janet Gaffney, AASD Food Services Director. “This is wonderful news for AASD families.”
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Community Eligibility Provision is a non-pricing meal service option for school districts in low-income areas. By meeting certain eligibility requirements of the provision, AASD students will now automatically receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Previously, the District was required to collect applications from families for the Free-and-Reduced Breakfast/Lunch Program before students were eligible for the benefit.
The provision only covers the cost of breakfast and lunch meals. A la carte items such as milk and snack bar items are not included and will continue to be sold a la carte.
Students arriving for the first day of Kindergarten Readiness Camp in the District were greeted by smiling faces and new friends.
The camp is designed to prepare students for the transition into Kindergarten. Families with children registered for the Kindergarten program for the 2019-2020 School Year were provided with free transportation to the elementary school to which their child is assigned. Once there, students will receive both breakfast and lunch, have the opportunity to meet their new classmates and teachers and familiarize themselves with their news classrooms and school.

Band Camp is in full swing at the high school! This year’s theme is all about Billy Joel, and the band is well on their way to learning their field positions. While we’re under “Pressure” to finish the show and it’s hot outside, the senior drum majors want everyone to know that “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “working too hard can give you a heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack.” The band’s performance calendar can be found at bridgerband.com.

The Technology Education department is pleased to announce, at the 41st National Technology Student Association Conference held at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in National Harbor, Maryland five High School students stood on stage in front of over 8,500 conference attendees. Our local Ambridge Area Chapter of the Technology Student Association (TSA) captured 7th place in the Board Game Design event, beating out over 100 entries from all around the world. Dinah Bailey, Jordan DeWeese, Kyla Fitzgibbons, Natalie Garrison and Madeline Smith attended this 5-day event and had the opportunity to attend leadership secession and network with TSA and industry leaders from all around the globe.

Ambridge Area School Board of Directors approved the transfer of Mr. David Turk to the newly-created 10-month position of Middle School Assistant Principal at the July 17 meeting. Mr. Turk previously served as a health and physical education teacher at Ambridge Area High School since 2011. He will begin his duties immediately at an annual salary of $70,000.
Mr. Turk holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock University (Pa.) and earned his Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Health and Physical Education. He also holds a Master of Education degree in School Administration (Principal K-12) from California University (Pa.).
He began his professional career in the Pittsburgh Public Schools in January 2010, where he served as a substitute teacher at Perry High School. He later became a building substitute with Pittsburgh Public Schools, serving in a variety of roles including Assistant to the Administration and Assistant Technology Technician. He was hired by Ambridge Area School District to work as a health and physical education teacher, a position he held from 2011 to present.
Mr. Turk said he is looking forward to serving in his new role at the Middle School, and thanked the School Board for providing him with the opportunity. “I appreciate the opportunity that I’ve been given, and I look forward to working with all of the Middle School staff and most important of all, I look forward to working with the students,” he said.
Superintendent Dr. Jo Welter said Mr. Turk will be an incredible asset to the Middle School. “His focus is on a mentorship program for the Middle School students so that our students have guidance and mentorship from the minute they enter the school until the time they leave, and so parents have a dedicated liaison. I’m very excited to have him working with us.”
